Jonathan D. Cybulski
Historical ecologist and science communicator

ABOUT

Dr. Jonathan Cybulski is a historical ecologist and science communicator, National Geographic Explorer, Swire Scholar, Smithsonian Fellow, and TedX Speaker. He is currently working as an Earl S. Tupper postdoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama in collaboration with Dr. Aaron O'Dea's tropical ecology laboratory and Dr. Ashely Sharpe. He is also an affiliated researcher at The University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography in Dr. Kelton McMahon's Ocean Ecogeochemistry lab.

Jonathan's current research focuses on the story of the Pacific's coral reef ecosystems - what they were like in the past, how they have grown and changed into their present state, and what this might mean for their persistence into the future. Specifically, he is interested in the human-environment interaction that exists across time on these reefs. Jonathan uses a combination of historical research, archaeology, ecology, geology, and biogeochemical methods in order to understand and communicate the story of these ecosystems through time.

Through his science communication and storytelling, Jonathan hopes to accomplish one main goal: humanise science and those who practice it, to foster its understanding and appreciation for all.
